Halong to be a non-smoking city
Update: Sep 29, 2009
On September 26, Vietnam’s northern coastal Halong city mobilized a plan to establish the city as a non-smoking destination. The plan aims to promote the state’s regulations about the harmfulness of smoking to local people and tourists.

Accordingly, related agencies will set up content and regulations about stopping smoking in public place and in offices and educate the public about the harmfulness of smoking.

The US’s Campaign for Tobacco - Free Kids Organization chose Halong to undertake the plan. It was capitalized at USD284,500 by the Vietnam Union of Science & Technology Associations (VUSTA) from 2009 to 2011.

The World Trade Organization (WHO) assessed that establishing Halong as a non-smoking city is a practical action to comply with the framework convention of the WHO about smoking control as Vietnam is among 164 countries which approved the convention.
