General Vo Nguyen Giap’s Tomb

Location: Vung Chua – Yen (Swallow) Island Area, Tho Son Hamlet, Quang Dong Commune, Quang Trach District, Quang Binh Province, more than 2km to the east of National Road 1.

Characteristics: The road to General Vo Nguyen Giap’s tomb has 103-step staircase, 103 apricot trees and 103 Phanera variegate trees representing the General’s 103 year olds.

About General Vo Nguyen Giap

Vo Nguyen Giap (1911 - 2013) was the first general of Viet Nam People’s Armed Forces, commander-in-chief of Dien Bien Phu Campaign (1954). In 1984, the New Encyclopedia Britannica - one of the most massive encyclopedia in the world - voted General Vo Nguyen Giap as one of 10 preeminent generals of the world.

 

Vung Chua – Yen Island

Vung Chua – Yen Island of Quang Binh motherland had been chosen by the General as his last resting place. Owning ​​spectacular and pristine natural scenery, Vung Chua Area backs to Tho Son Mountain, faces East Sea with many small islands as La, Gio, Nom (Yen Island). General Vo Nguyen Giap’s tomb is located in Mui Rong (Dragon Cape) reaching to the sea and being opposite to Yen Island.

 

 

The General’s Tomb

Squad 1 under Border Guard Post 184 (Quang Binh Province’s Border Defense Force) guards the General’s tomb 24/24h. The guards are divided into 3 points: receiving visitors; monitoring and guiding visitors; guiding of incense burning in the General’s tomb.

 

To embellish the landscape of the General’s tomb, 13,000 pine and coconut trees were planted in Tho Son Mountain and along the road leading to the tomb.The bell tower located near the General’s tomb has a bronze bell engraved four words “Vung Chua Hong Chung” (Vung Chua Bell).

 

Tens of thousands of visitors come to burn incense and visit the General’s tomb per month, especially on holidays  and weekends.
