Update: Mar 27, 2024
The ancient town of Hoi An in central Vietnam has been selected as the cheapest holiday destination in the world this year, according to the Holiday Money Report conducted by the UK Post Office.

Hoi An tops the list of world’s cheapest destinations, according to the UK Post Office

According to the study, Vietnam topped the leaderboard for the first time as the cheapest travel location in the world.

The UK Post Office revealed that the former port city of Hoi An leads the way for travellers on a budgetthanks to lower restaurant and bar charges, as well as a considerable drop in the value of the VND which means visitor’s money can last long when travelling around the nation.

The Post Office’s Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer combined the average local price of eight popular tourist items.

The expenditure needed to purchase a local coffee, beer, cola, a glass of wine, a bottle of water, suncream, insect repellent, and a three-course meal in Hoi An is £58.39.

The city also leads the way on three of these metrics, with beer at £1.16, Coca-Cola at £0.72, and suncream at £3.70. Lower costs mean that the city has jumped upfrom sixth place in 2023.

“Hoi An is one of Vietnam’s most charming and atmospheric cities. The commercial hustle and bustle of the bucket list destination’s larger, more metropolitan cities is almost entirely absent,” said the website.

“Travellers spend mornings on the pristine beaches, afternoons touring fascinating historical sites, and evenings seeking out the tastiest corners of the Hoi An Night Market,” it noted.

Most notably, Hoi An is one of the best places in the world to catch up on one’s sleep, according to the Skyscanner 2024 UK Travel Trends Report, which analysed cities with hotels with the best sleep quality scores.

Rounding off the list of world’s cheapest destinations was Cape Town of South Africa at £54.35, Mombasa of Kenya at £54.93, Tokyo of Japan at £59.05, theAlgarve of Portugal at £59.69, Sharm el-Sheikh of Egypt at £61.37, Sunny Beach of Bulgaria at £62.49, Kuta of Bali at £63.31, Marmaris of Turkey at £66.07, and Paphos of Cyprus at £73.32.
