Xoan singing proposed as part of world cultural heritage
Update: Jun 29, 2009
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has asked the Prime Minister for permission to prepare a file to be submitted to UNESCO to gain recognition for the traditional Xoan singing of Phu Tho Province as a part of the world cultural heritage that needs urgent protection.

In response to this, the Phu Tho provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has joined hands with the Vietnam Music Institute and the Vietnam Folk Arts Society to launch a field survey in Phuong Lau Commune in Viet Tri City, and Kim Duc Commune in Phu Ninh District.

Vietnamese scientists all agree on the urgency of the protection of the art as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.

They say attention should be given to collecting and organizing Xoan-related documents in preparation for careful research and analysis as well as the restoration of the traditional rituals of Xoan singing.
